IT'S YOUR TURN - Take Action Now on Healthcare Reform
Healthcare reform is in jeopardy. As you have heard in the news, the US House of Representatives passed its healthcare reform bill last weekend. While this is a good bill overall, it included a dangerous amendment, called the Stupak-Pitts amendment, which will cause women who have insurance to lose benefits they currently have and will expand restrictions on coverage for abortion services for all women.
Sixty-four Democrats-including a few who have been prochoice in the past-and all but one Republican, voted for the Stupak-Pitts amendment. While passage of this amendment is disappointing to be sure, our focus must now shift to the Senate which is still considering its version of the healthcare reform legislation.
Your voice as a Catholic is important in this debate. Congress has listened to the bishops, now let them hear from you.
We know that Catholics support healthcare reform that includes coverage for all reproductive healthcare services, including abortion. We don't want women to lose access to abortion services they may need because of a small but vocal group of antichoice activists.
This is an issue of social justice that concerns us all- and we need people like you to speak out now and make your voices heard in the debate on healthcare reform.

There are several ways you can take action:
- Track Local Media. Keep up with healthcare and policy reporting in your local print media. Be prepared to write letters to the editor in response to articles and op-eds—either in support of their arguments, or correcting facts that you consider to be wrong. We can help you draft those if needed. Just contact us here media@catholicsforchoice.org and we will provide the information you need.
- Send Thank You E-mails to champions of reproductive healthcare services. Representatives Lois Capps (D-CA), Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), Diana DeGette (D-CO) and Louise Slaughter (D-NY) advocated on the behalf of all women, in particular those most in need of healthcare reform: the uninsured. Each of these strongly prochoice congresswomen fought diligently against a floor vote for the Stupak-Pitts amendment, at times against their own leadership in the House. Please send a note of thanks to these four representatives by clicking here.
