Tell the Obama Administration to Stand Strong with Women

We need you to keep the pressure on the White House. We told you last week about President Obama’s private meeting with the head of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops. Conservative voices continue to lobby the White House to expand this refusal clause so that millions of women would be unable to access contraception without co-pays under the Affordable Care Act.

President Obama is back in the country for the Thanksgiving holiday after an extended trip overseas. Now more than ever, he needs to hear from Americans like you–Americans do not support expansive and burdensome refusal clauses–before he makes his decision on the coverage of contraception as part of healthcare reform.

Keep calling the White House and urge others to call as well. Call toll-free at 1-888-534-5471. Tell President Obama that:

  • Catholics overwhelmingly reject the bishops’ views on contraception. Ninety-eight percent of Catholic women have used a modern contraceptive method at some point in their lives. It is vital that the White House listen to the voices of Catholic women and men, not the just the bishops’, on this important health issue.
  • Catholics throughout the United States support access to contraception for all women and men, regardless of where they happen to work. It is discriminatory to deny these women and men access to this important provision simply because the institution where they work or the school they attend is religiously affiliated. Individuals have consciences—institutions do not— and no employee’s boss should be able to prevent a person from following their conscience.
  • Expanding refusal clauses to allow certain institutions and universities to refuse to provide coverage for contraception is not what Americans want as a part of healthcare reform. Federal dollars should be used for the common good and to enable people to exercise their conscience-based healthcare decisions. The original vision of our founding fathers on religious freedom would have it no other way.

Tell President Obama to give women and men something to be thankful for this holiday season ― access to contraception and family planning services without a co-pay, regardless of where they happen to be employed or what university or college they attend.
