Group Says Many Catholics Oppose Vatican on Sexual Behavior Issues

NEW YORK — Catholics for a Free Choice last week released a new report that shows global Catholic public opinion varies on issues including sexual behavior and condom use to prevent HIV/AIDS from the Vatican, according to a news release from the organization. The United Nations is hosting the Commission on Population & Development during the 10th anniversary of the Cairo Programme of Action, which pledged to increase worldwide access to family planning and condoms to prevent AIDS, Catholics for a Free Choice stated. The group said in its release that “the world waits to see if the Vatican and the United States will once again … oppose sensible policies on family planning, reproductive health and condom use to prevent HIV/AIDS.” A new report from the group shows that public opinion data from one billion Catholics polled worldwide indicates most support abortion rights and increased access to contraception and condoms, the organization said in its news release.
