The results of an international survey by Univision show that large majorities of Catholics around the world support the use of contraception and access to abortion care.
“The world now knows what Catholics have known for a long time—we reject the Vatican’s dictates on sex, family life and reproductive issues,” said Jon O’Brien, president of Catholics for Choice, in response to the findings.
“These results are consistent with US findings, which show that Catholic women have abortions at rates similar to other women, that fully 85 percent of Catholics reject the Vatican’s blanket opposition to all abortion and that 99 percent of sexually active Catholic women have used a contraceptive method banned by the Vatican. It’s time for the media and policymakers to recognize that when it comes to what Catholics think about these critical issues of social justice and public health, the Vatican simply does not speak for us.”
