Catholics Lift Up Voices of Faith in Dallas for Reproductive Rights of Texas Women

Today, Catholics for Choice co-sponsors an event in Dallas that will celebrate voices of faith, and remember their important role in the fight for choice in Texas—and the country. “Again in Texas” will honor members of the original Women’s Alliance at Dallas First Unitarian Church who quietly sparked the movement for access to legal abortion, as well as Sarah Weddington, the lawyer who represented “Jane Roe” in the landmark Roe v. Wade Supreme Court case. Sara Hutchinson, domestic program director at Catholics for Choice, will address issues that continue to affect Texas women today, including impediments to abortion access, and represent the views of faithful, prochoice Catholics.
In her prepared remarks, Sara Hutchinson said, “Here in Texas, we’ve seen the bishops and their antichoice conservative allies in Austin restrict access, impede conscience and curtail the rights of millions in order to achieve their end goal—to make abortion services impossible in this state. This flies in the face of our Catholic tradition of social justice.
“We know that the vast majority of the 7.1 million Catholics in Texas support policies that allow women and men to follow their own consciences when it comes to personal, private decisions about whether and when to have children. Tonight, Catholics and our partners of many faiths stand with us to speak out for what is right and what is just.”
Sara Hutchinson will introduce Lucy Carreon, a Texas Catholic who has spent most of the last decade caring for women in the Rio Grande Valley at Whole Woman’s Health in McAllen. The McAllen clinic, which served one of the most predominately Catholic areas of the country, was recently forced to shutter its doors because of Texas’ new restrictive laws on abortion. Lucy continues to work to ensure women are able to follow their consciences when it comes to reproductive rights—and that those rights are respected.
