Catholics for Choice Announces The Overreach Monitor on Third Anniversary of Dobbs Decision

WASHINGTON — Catholics for Choice, which serves the pro-choice Catholic majority, is launching The Overreach Monitor: A Catholics for Choice Watchdog, a new Substack publication that will expose the influence of Catholic anti-choice players on our politics. The Overreach Monitor will serve as the opposition research arm of Catholics for Choice as part think-tank, park investigator.

The publication will feature in-depth investigations, commentary, and analysis from Catholics for Choice staff and external contributors, building on Catholics for Choice’s legacy of opposition research on key Catholic anti-choice players and their influence on politics. Chris Wimbush will serve as Publisher, and Ashley Hildebrand will serve as the Editor-in-Chief, curating content to keep partners in the reproductive rights and anti-Christian nationalism efforts informed.

“Three years ago today, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade; it was the crowning achievement of decades of campaigning by an anti-abortion movement that has always been religious,” said Chris Wimbush, Interim President of Catholics for Choice and Publisher of The Overreach Monitor. “We saw a renewed need for opposition research after Dobbs, as Catholic bishops and other Catholic anti-abortion lobbies poured millions into influencing reproductive rights-protecting ballot initiatives. The watchdog will help reproductive rights workers, Hill staff, media, and others understand Catholic connections to their work.”

“Religious overreach affects us all, whether you are Catholic or not,” said Ashley Hildebrand, Senior Advisor at Catholics for Choice and Editor-in-Chief of The Overreach Monitor. “While we feel emboldened by the statistics that prove most people of faith — and most Americans — support abortion access, we realized more needs to be done to expose the insidious and pervasive nature of this uniquely Catholic overreach. For too long, society has allowed an extreme minority to wield power in our political systems. We need this watchdog to call out the misuse of the Catholic tradition in pursuit of power, especially now that we are in an era with abortion-hostile state and federal governments.”

The Overreach Monitor launches with its first post today and has upcoming plans to release op-ed commentary, analysis of current events, and investigations on Catholic healthcare and Catholic college campuses. Anyone can subscribe to The Overreach Monitor at overreachmonitor.org.
