Catholics for Choice Condemns Decision in Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic
WASHINGTON — Catholics for Choice, which serves the pro-choice Catholic majority, released the following statement from Ashley Hildebrand, Senior Advisor, in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to permit states to strip Medicaid dollars from Planned Parenthood health centers:
“Today’s decision to prevent Planned Parenthood from receiving Medicaid dollars is a direct violation of the Catholic social justice principles of preferential option for the poor and the right to healthcare. It is shameful that the majority-Catholic Supreme Court would cherry-pick their beliefs to justify extreme anti-abortion views but forget these core principles.
“This case was brought by the so-called Alliance Defending Freedom. This is the same organization that has worked to weaponize and distort the very concept of religious freedom in cases like Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization and Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission.
“Their work is fully in service of their cruel agenda to restrict abortion access and force Americans to live in a white Christian nationalist society that marginalizes us all. It is long overdue to call out who is behind these constant attacks on our rights.
“Planned Parenthood health centers provide a range of health services, from birth control to cancer screenings. People in poverty who are on Medicaid should not be prevented from receiving this care.
“This is the latest in a long line of partisan attacks on Planned Parenthood, and the latest way that marginalized people get caught in the crosshairs and suffer the most. Catholics for Choice unequivocally stands with Planned Parenthood, affirms healthcare as a human right, and condemns today’s decision in the strongest possible terms.”
