Catholics for Choice Responds to Mahmoud v. Taylor

WASHINGTON — Catholics for Choice, which serves the pro-choice Catholic majority, released the following statement from Taylor Tuckerman, Vice President of Finance and Shared Services in response to today’s U.S. Supreme Court decision to allow parents of public-school children to withdraw their students from class during LGBTQIA+ story time:

“As a parent of a Montgomery County toddler, I am trying to teach my son that there are many different types of families and all the ways people grow up to be their most authentic selves. He learns this lesson through conversations with his parents, being observant of the people in our community, and through storybooks, which have proven to be so useful when I need help finding the right words to say.

“I am proud that Montgomery County schools and teachers decided to also reinforce these messages of love and acceptance. They are lessons every child needs to learn. It’s also important for children to learn that our differences — religion, sexual orientation, gender expression, race, economic backgrounds, and more — contribute to a thriving community and are not something to be ashamed of.

“But instead of affirming these positive messages of inclusion, the Supreme Court decided that it is okay for parents to teach their children to discriminate and judge people who are different than them. Those are not the civic values or religious values my husband and I are teaching our son, and they are not the values of the Montgomery County parents I know.”
