Catholics for Choice Responds to Skrmetti v. United States

WASHINGTON — Catholics for Choice, which serves the pro-choice Catholic majority, released the following statement from Chris Wimbush, Interim President, in response to today’s U.S. Supreme Court decision that healthcare bans for transgender minors are not a violation of the 14th Amendment:

“As people of faith, we believe that all people have inherent human dignity and the right to healthcare. Today’s decision by the Supreme Court violates those basic principles, regardless of how they interpreted the 14th Amendment.

“We support every child’s – and every person’s – right to make the healthcare decisions that are right for them, in consultation with their families, their communities, and their doctors. We all deserve to make healthcare decisions without government interference. Today’s Supreme Court decision says that 6 justices in Washington, D.C. and partisan legislators in the 26 states that have enacted bans on gender affirming care for young people know better than a child and their parents. They don’t.

“At Catholics for Choice, we will continue to fight for the human dignity and healthcare decisions of all people. Politicians have no place meddling in our healthcare.”
