Catholics for Choice Statement on Trump Administration Rescinding Emergency Abortion Care Guidance

WASHINGTON — Catholics for Choice, which uplifts and amplifies the voices of the majority of Catholics who believe in reproductive freedom, released the following statement from Senior Advisor Ashley Hildebrand in response to today’s announcement from the Department of Health and Human Services about the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA):

“Today, the Trump Administration rescinded guidance that made it undoubtedly clear that hospitals are required to provide emergency abortion care to save a patient’s life. While the requirement to provide that care still holds, today’s decision creates more chaos in medical emergencies. The last thing anyone needs in an emergency is more confusion or fear.

“As Catholics, we believe that all people have a right to healthcare — and that includes abortion access. It is not lost on us that one of the instigators of this policy change is the Catholic Medical Association, which challenged the guidance in court. They have pushed a narrow doctrine over medicine, and they do not represent the views of Catholics. Let us be abundantly clear: most Catholics think abortion should be legal in all or most cases. That certainly includes medical emergencies.”
