Catholics for Choice Announces Spanish-Language Website and Social Media Expansion

June 1, 2021

WASHINGTON – Catholics for Choice, which uplifts and amplifies the voices of the majority of Catholics who believe in reproductive freedom, announced a major expansion of its Spanish-language outreach today. The move includes a special Spanish-language section of the CFC website, as well as the launch of dedicated Spanish-language platforms on Instagram and Twitter (@c4c_espanol), which will allow the organization to amplify translated content from its English-language social media pages, host content specifically created for Spanish-speaking supporters, and call attention to campaigns, events, and action items from partner organizations in Latin America.

Catholics for Choice President Jamie L. Manson said:

“We are thrilled to expand our outreach into Spanish-speaking communities in the United States and around the world. It is vitally important to engage with and empower Spanish-speaking Catholics, not only because Spanish is the native language for so many in the Church, but also because the deadly cost of the Catholic hierarchy’s anti-choice crusade is borne disproportionately by Spanish-speaking women and girls in the Global South, who are cruelly denied contraceptive and abortion access every day. These obstructions to care have life or death consequences, especially for the poorest and most vulnerable.”

A full 40% of all Catholics in the United States are Latinx, as are a clear majority of school-aged Catholics. More broadly, Latinx people accounted for over half of all U.S. population growth between 2010 and 2019. And among our nation’s immigrants, Spanish is far and away the most spoken non-English language, with 42% saying they speak Spanish at home.

Catholics for Choice Latin America Coordinator Lilian Medina Romero said:

“Immigration justice and the protection of the vulnerable and marginalized are fundamental Catholic values. Yet Latinx immigrants to the United States often rely on Catholic support networks, healthcare providers, and hospitals that withhold accurate information about reproductive healthcare and refuse to provide them with the full range of pregnancy-related services. Catholics for Choice’s new Spanish-language outreach initiative will allow us to provide newly-arriving immigrants with information that will help empower them to make the best healthcare decisions for themselves and their families.”

Catholics for Choice shapes and advances sexual and reproductive ethics that are based on justice, reflect a commitment to a person’s well-being and respect, and affirm the capacity of all people to make moral decisions about their lives.
