Catholics for Choice Endorses Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, Calls on Senate to Confirm Her to the Supreme Court
WASHINGTON – Catholics for Choice, which uplifts and amplifies the voices of the majority of Catholics who believe in reproductive freedom, today endorsed Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, President Biden’s nominee to fill the seat of retiring Justice Stephen G. Breyer on the United States Supreme Court. If confirmed, Judge Jackson would be the first Black woman to serve on the nation’s highest court.

“Catholics for Choice is proud to endorse the historic nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to serve on the Supreme Court. When Justice Breyer announced his retirement, we asked the Biden administration and the Senate to nominate and confirm a justice who will uphold the First Amendment’s protection of freedom of and from religion; safeguard the rights of equal protection and privacy; and advance justice, civil rights, equal rights, and individual liberties for all. We have no doubt that Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson is committed to upholding our most precious fundamental rights, and she will make an excellent Supreme Court justice.
“Based on our research, we believe that Judge Jackson will continue to be a fair, impartial, and balanced arbiter of the law. It’s clear that she understands that religious freedom is, in her words, ‘a core constitutional right’ that allows everyone to practice their faith without imposing it on others against their will. Her rulings in favor of unions, environmental protections, and reproductive justice align with our Catholic social justice values of human dignity, justice for the poor and marginalized, and responsible stewardship of the earth. And as the first Black woman to serve on our nation’s highest court, Judge Jackson will be a model for Black women and girls across the country, who – despite being the backbone of our democracy – are woefully underrepresented in the judicial system, making up fewer than 2% of all federal judges in U.S. history.
“In recent years, the Supreme Court has become a flashpoint for religious overreach by far-right ideologues who seek to impose their beliefs on our civil rights. In addition to refreshing religious diversity, Judge Jackson brings to the Court a combination of professional legal knowledge and personal lived experience that has been sorely missing. We urge the Senate to provide their advice and consent both thoroughly and expeditiously, and to confirm Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court with all deliberate speed.”
