Catholics for Choice Marks Dobbs Anniversary and One Year of The Overreach Monitor Exposing Catholic Anti-Abortion Overreach

WASHINGTON — Catholics for Choice, which serves the pro-choice Catholic majority, released the following statement from Kate Hoeting, Director of Education and Research, on the anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision and CFC’s ongoing work to expose the Catholic anti-choice infrastructure behind it:

“One year ago, we launched The Overreach Monitor: A Catholics for Choice Watchdog as a key resource featuring in-depth investigations, commentary, and opposition research on Catholic anti-choice players and their influence on U.S. policy, healthcare, and public life. Since then, we’ve investigated the deadly implications of Catholic healthcare systems operating under the restrictive Ethical and Religious Directives, documented how anti-abortion Crisis Pregnancy Centers mislead patients seeking care, and exposed the coordinated movement to weaponize our faith against reproductive freedom.

“We cannot forget that the movement that overturned Roe four years ago was, in large part, a Catholic one — but it does not speak for the 68% of Catholics who wanted Roe to remain the law of the land.”

To mark the anniversary, Nicole McCurdy, Organizing and Engagement Specialist, published an op-ed on white Christian nationalism in The Overreach Monitor and made the following statement:

“The Dobbs decision and the subsequent attacks on reproductive freedom are the direct result of white Christian nationalism fueled by the Catholic hierarchy’s anti-abortion agenda. Abortion bans directly contradict the First Amendment’s protection of religious freedom: They ignore pro-choice people of faith, including the majority of Catholics who support abortion access, and instead impose an unpopular anti-abortion religious belief.

Dobbs made clear that a well-organized and well-funded minority can wield enormous power when its influence goes unexamined. That’s exactly why we built The Overreach Monitor. For the reproductive rights movement, The Overreach Monitor is a tool to understand the architecture of white Christian nationalism and to hold it accountable.”
