Catholics for Choice Reacts to Supreme Court Leak on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization

WASHINGTON – In response to the leak of a draft Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision first reported by Politico that directly overturns Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, Catholics for Choice President Jamie L. Manson, M.Div. released the following statement:

“This leak – if true – is unprecedented and shocking. The alleged decision, decimating fifty years of the court’s own opinions, is an affront to our nation’s judicial process and devastating to the people whose lives are jeopardized by the court’s actions.

“Any weakening or overturning of Roe v. Wade is a direct result of the overreach of the Catholic Church, led by a small group of old, mostly white, allegedly celibate men who will never, ever become pregnant – yet have spent almost 50 years and millions of dollars trying to control women’s bodies, capture the federal judiciary, and take choice out of the rightful hands of patients and their caregivers. It looks like, in the coming weeks, these unholy ideologues will likely succeed. To the Catholic bishops of the United States, we say: how dare you!

“Whatever happens come decision day, we know this: 68% of Catholics support the legal abortion protections in Roe v. Wade. One in four abortion patients is Catholic. Abortion is a part of the life of the church, and God loves anyone who has chosen to have an abortion. The time is now for the silent majority of pro-choice Catholics and former Catholics to be outspoken and emboldened in their support for abortion access for those who choose it.

“To the Catholics who are just waking up to this news realizing that this essential right is on the brink of being taken away, I invite you to join Catholics for Choice. The overturning of Roe v. Wade is not a win for Catholics, no matter what Justices Alito, Kavanaugh, Thomas, Gorsuch, and Coney Barrett or the bishops say. This decision will affect everyone: your neighbors, someone you love – even you personally.”

Catholics for Choice shapes and advances sexual and reproductive ethics that are based on justice, reflect a commitment to a person’s well-being and respect, and affirm the capacity of all people to make moral decisions about their lives.
