Catholics for Choice Responds to Court Ruling That Restricts Access to Mifepristone Nationwide
WASHINGTON — Catholics for Choice, which serves the pro-choice Catholic majority, released the following statement from Steph Hanson-Quintana, Vice President of Organizing and Engagement, in response to a Fifth Circuit court ruling that restricts access to mifepristone nationwide by reinstating in-person dispensing requirements.
“As the faithful pro-choice majority, we are painfully aware of the catastrophic effects this ruling will have on abortion access, especially for the most vulnerable — the very communities Catholic social teaching guides us to protect.
“This politically motivated attack threatens an individual’s ability to make conscience-driven decisions to end a pregnancy or manage a pregnancy loss. Well-funded Christian nationalist and right-wing Catholic organizations will stop at nothing to curtail reproductive freedom — no matter what the public believes and doctors advise.”

“At Catholics for Choice, we trust people to make faithful decisions about their bodies. The bishops cannot say the same. They have repeatedly called for banning telehealth for routine, safe reproductive healthcare. They have spent decades spreading extreme anti-abortion disinformation that perpetuates fear, shame, and isolation. These lies are rooted in neither scientific evidence nor truly compassionate faith. Once again, religious overreach has paved the way for an unpopular decision that will impact millions.
“Mifepristone is safe. Mifepristone is effective. For many seeking to end their pregnancies, mifepristone is lifesaving. We are proud to stand with the pro-choice majority in supporting access to abortion care — including through mifepristone.”
