New Video: Hobby Lobby Case Is Just the Tip of the Iceberg

June 24, 2014

All eyes are on the Supreme Court, as the imminent decision in the Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Wood cases could alter the definition of religious freedom as Americans know it. But these cases are the just tip of the iceberg, part of a long line of complaints brought by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops and its ultraconservative allies using bogus arguments about conscience rights and religious liberty.

A new short film from the Coalition for Liberty & Justice shows what happens when religious extremists in the US use religion as a license to discriminate against hospital staff, teachers and other workers who do not conform to the extremists’ views of what is acceptable. This discrimination takes place using your tax dollars.

“Real religious liberty encompasses freedom of religion and freedom from religion,” said Jon O’Brien, president of Catholics for Choice. “This new short film from the Coalition for Liberty & Justice highlights what happens when extremists use religion to play politics with people’s lives. All Americans—regardless of what’s in their wallets or where they live—must have the right follow to their own consciences and be free from having another person’s beliefs forced upon them.”

Watch this short video calling for Americans to band together to protect everybody’s religious liberty– and to oppose public policies that seek to impose one religious viewpoint on all.

The Coalition for Liberty & Justice is a broad alliance of faith-based, secular and other organizations that works to ensure that public policy protects the religious liberty of individuals of all faiths and no faith and to oppose public policies that impose one religious viewpoint on all.
