Catholics for Choice Responds to Supreme Court Ruling on Texas’ Draconian Abortion Ban
WASHINGTON — Catholics for Choice, which uplifts and amplifies the voices of the majority of Catholics who believe in reproductive freedom, issued the following statement from President Jamie L. Manson after the Supreme Court allowed only some lawsuits against Texas SB 8 to move forward:
“Today, our hearts are with Texas abortion providers, funds, clergy, and those seeking care who have now been denied their fundamental right to abortion for more than 100 days. Catholics for Choice knows that SB 8 is blatantly unconstitutional and remains hopeful that the Supreme Court’s decision today will provide a pathway to relief. Texans can’t wait any longer.
“As Catholics, we believe that obstructions to abortion access violate our values of social justice, human dignity, liberation, and religious freedom. These restrictions disproportionately harm people who already face discriminatory obstacles to accessing healthcare, especially Black people, Indigenous people, and other people of color, those working to make ends meet, women, young people, people with disabilities, immigrants, and members of the LGBTQI+ community. We know the majority of Americans – and the majority of U.S. Catholics – want Roe v. Wade to remain in place and for abortion to remain legal in all or most cases. Now is the time to speak out and join Catholics for Choice in calling on pro-choice Catholics in the White House and Congress to safeguard reproductive freedom from further judicial assault and ensure that abortion is available and affordable to anyone who seeks it. This starts with the passage of the Women’s Health Protection Act (HR 3755/S 1975) and EACH Act (HR 2234/S 1021).”
