Prochoice Catholics in ABQ Are Raising Their Voices in the Media

November 12, 2013

Albuquerque Catholics are speaking out in a media campaign against a harsh ballot measure that would ban later abortion in the city. The ballot measure, if passed, would ban abortion after 20 weeks, with no exceptions for rape, incest or the health of a pregnant woman. As the US Senate considers similar legislation, Albuquerque Catholics have made clear that they disagree with such bans. In the Daily Lobo and weekly Alibi, and on several radio stations, including KPEK-FM, KRST-FM, KZRR-FM, KDRF-FM, KKOB-FM, KRZY-FM and KKRG-FM, Catholics from Albuquerque are making their voices heard.

  • “I believe in social justice. Women have abortions for different reasons, and none of these reasons are for us to judge or criticize.” –Bernadette
  • “As a Catholic, I want my granddaughters to be able to make decisions based on their consciences. I don’t want them to be judged or bullied into a decision that is not right for them.” –Jerry

Sara Hutchinson, director of the domestic program at Catholics for Choice, said, “We’ve seen and heard from ABQ Catholics that they are overwhelmingly against this measure. On the ground, Catholics in Albuquerque are attending rallies and speaking out in the media and in radio and newspaper ads.

“In New Mexico, there are more than half a million Catholics. Only five of them are bishops. The majority of Catholics support policies that enable women and men to make their own decisions about whether and when to have children. ABQ Catholics don’t want their voices misrepresented by those who pretend to speak for all Catholics.”
